A Night with Buddha - Echoes of Silence
Presented in Forbidden culture week in Collaboration with Malmö City
As part of Forbidden Culture Week, in collaboration with Malmö City Library and artists from Malmö Theater Academy, the iconic Buddha statues of Bamiyan were projected onto the library’s facade in a striking act of remembrance and resistance. In March 2001, the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas, erasing a key symbol of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. In 2013, cultural practitioners responded by projecting the statues onto the empty mountain wall. Building on this powerful act, A Night with Buddha – Echoes of Silence was presented on October 16th as a site-specific outdoor project. Led by Monirah Hashemi, a co-initiator of the 2013 project, and supported by MA Performing Arts students Maryam Hashempour and Zsofia Kozma, the event combined storytelling, music, dance, and projected images of the Buddhas.
